The cheapest pick here, with lots of settings including gluten-free and yogurt, in a compact body. Testers disagree: Wirecutter and Food & Wine were pleasantly surprised, while Serious Eats and The Spruce Eats got collapsed loaves.

Top complaints

  • Collapsed or uneven loaves

Serious Eats says both loaves collapsed heavily from overproofing, and The Spruce Eats' white loaf had a completely sunken top. Wirecutter found some loaves denser at the bottom and airier in the middle.

  • Loud, shaky, burning smell

Serious Eats found it loud and shaky during kneading. The Spruce Eats says it gave off smoke that smelled like burning plastic as it baked. Amazon owners are split on noise.

  • Unreliable timing

Food & Wine says the timer settings can be unreliable; its banana bread needed an extra 20 minutes, possibly because of the machine's low power.

What owners love

  • Surprisingly good for the price

Wirecutter says this sub-$100 model surprised it with well-risen, nicely browned loaves that were fully baked. Amazon owners say it makes excellent bread.

  • Lots of settings

Food & Wine says it can make everything from gluten-free bread to a French loaf, plus cake, jam and yogurt, with crust color control.

  • Compact; loaves release easily

Food & Wine and Amazon owners like the compact size, and The Spruce Eats says loaves came out of the nonstick pan easily.

Good for
  • Trying a bread machine for under $100
  • Small households and small kitchens
  • Extras like jam and yogurt

  • Wirecutter (NYT): A cheaper alternative to its budget pick: well-risen, browned loaves, though not as consistent.
  • Serious Eats: Not recommended: loud and shaky, and both loaves collapsed heavily.
  • The Spruce Eats: Not recommended: a burning-plastic smell and a sunken white loaf; you get what you pay for.
