Small sample (622 ratings); pools matte black and matte white.

Serious Eats' most foolproof brewer, with guided, pour-over-style brewing. But Wirecutter found its automatic mode flat and slow, both found the carafe loses heat quickly, and 30% of its Amazon ratings are 1-2 stars.

Top complaints

  • Carafe loses heat fast

Serious Eats measured 156.5°F after 60 minutes, versus 170°F in the OXO 9-Cup. Wirecutter says the carafe lost heat faster than its picks' and was prone to spilling. Coffee temperature is mixed on Amazon, with some saying it cools within 10-20 minutes.

  • Reliability and build complaints

Reliability and build quality are mixed aspects on Amazon, where some owners say it stopped working properly after seven months or that plastic pieces broke off. Wirecutter found the brew-ahead function a bit glitchy.

  • Slow, inconsistent auto mode; pricey

Wirecutter got flat or inconsistent results on the automatic setting, a 10-minute-15-second full pot, and a hard-to-clean reservoir. Serious Eats says it's very expensive and not worth it if you won't use the special features.

What owners love

  • Pour-over-style extraction

Serious Eats says the 15-hole showerhead nearly eliminates channeling, and every batch was well extracted. Wirecutter found its advanced settings and single-serve feature made a superior cup.

  • Guided brewing with a built-in scale

Pick a roast and a batch size, and it measures the water and tells you how much coffee to add (Serious Eats). Brew water was within 2-3°F of the target and always at least 195°F.

  • Compact, removable tank

About 9 inches wide and 12 inches tall, it fits under cabinets with the lid open, and the removable reservoir is easy to fill (Serious Eats).

Good for
  • Pour-over-style coffee without the kettle
  • Coffee nerds who want app profiles and settings
  • Brewing anything from one cup to a full pot

Scores (tap for why)

Why 4.5?Always reached at least 195°F and stayed within 2-3°F of the target (Serious Eats).

Why 4.0?Serious Eats says you can't mess it up; Wirecutter found brew-ahead glitchy.
  • Easy cleaning3.0
Why 3.0?The reservoir is removable, but Wirecutter found it difficult to clean.
    Source: Wirecutter
  • Carafe & keeping warm2.5
Why 2.5?Lost heat faster than rivals in both expert tests, and Wirecutter found it spill-prone.
  • Durability2.5
Why 2.5?30% of Amazon ratings are 1-2 stars, with reliability and build mixed. The warranty is 2 years, or 3 with registration (Serious Eats).

What experts say

  • Serious Eats: Most foolproof drip maker. Cons: weak heat retention, and not worth it if you skip the custom features.
  • Wirecutter (NYT): Dismissed: custom settings made a superior cup, but auto brew was flat or inconsistent, a full pot took 10:15, the carafe spilled and lost heat, and brew-ahead was glitchy.
