Based on only 130 Amazon ratings (27% 1-star, 9% 2-star). Walmart's 'Ultra Smart Sonic' listing (559 ratings) shows 12% at 1-2 stars.

A stylish, long-lasting sonic brush that Tom's Guide picks for whitening. Its pods are pricey, its pressure sensor often trips at a light touch, and owners report breakage and charging trouble. A third of its Amazon ratings are 1-2 stars.

Top complaints

  • Breaks or stops charging

Amazon's summary says build quality and durability are mixed, with some units breaking within a week, and calls battery life problematic with multiple charging complaints. Walmart 1-star reviews describe a head that snapped after 3 weeks, a handle band coming loose, pods falling off at about 10 months, and no charging light.

  • Over-eager pressure sensor

Several Walmart 1-star reviewers say the brush pulses, beeps or stops even when barely touching their teeth. In a reply, quip says the sensor can be toggled in the app and that users shouldn't scrub.

  • Expensive brush pods

Tom's Guide lists head cost as the main drawback: $12 each, or $8 on subscription. Wirecutter gives the same prices and says swapping the pod takes more dexterity than a normal head.

  • Touch slider changes power by accident

Wirecutter found the haptic slider easy to bump while brushing, and the battery indicator sometimes failed to warn before the battery died.

What owners love

  • Visibly whiter teeth

Tom's Guide was skeptical of quip's whitening claim but says the results were undeniable.

  • 30-day battery and good accessories

Tom's Guide cites up to 30 days per charge plus a stand and travel case.

  • More power than older quips

Wirecutter says it feels more powerful than previous quip models and praises the slim head, grippy handle and effective pressure sensor.

What experts say

  • Tom's Guide: Best for whitening (updated 2026-05-29). It is user friendly, but the app's smart features add little, some users may feel sensitivity at high intensity, and heads are expensive.
  • Wirecutter (NYT): Not picked: thoughtful design and an effective pressure sensor, but the slider is easy to bump by accident, the battery warnings are unreliable and pod swaps are fiddly.
  • Electric Teeth: Rates the Ultra the best quip (4.8/5), at about $100 direct; the warranty is 1 year, or as long as you keep a subscription.
