Long the benchmark instant-read: about one-second readings, top accuracy and a 5-year warranty. Wirecutter now says cheaper models match it, and Serious Eats reports it is being discontinued in favor of the Thermapen Nano.
Top complaints
- Hard to justify the price
Wirecutter dropped it as its upgrade pick because the Javelin Pro Duo and ThermoWorks Sizzle were just as fast and accurate, so it isn't worth two to three times the price. Amazon's review summary says opinions on its value are mixed.
- Settings are hidden under the battery cover
Tom's Guide says you must unscrew the battery compartment to switch °F/°C, change brightness or adjust calibration, then reassemble it before use.
Source: Tom's Guide - Spot checks only; screen contrast could be better
Tom's Guide lists that you can't leave it in and it has no smart features. Serious Eats says the screen numbers could use more contrast.
What owners love
- About one second, very accurate
Tom's Guide measured 1 to 1.5 seconds and ±0.1°F, the most accurate in its testing. Serious Eats found it nearly as fast as its one-second claim.
- Screen reads from any angle
Serious Eats praises the 360-degree auto-rotating screen, auto-backlight and auto on/off.
Source: Serious Eats (meat thermometers) - Owners call it a true instant read
Amazon's review summary says owners find it extremely accurate and easy to read, with phenomenal battery life.
- You want to leave a probe in the roast
- You want an app or alerts
- You'd rather pay a third as much for nearly the same speed
- Fastest, most accurate spot checks
- Daily use for years (5-year warranty)
- Frying oil, candy and baking as well as meat

What experts say
- Serious Eats (meat thermometers): Best meat thermometer (updated July 2026): blisteringly fast and very accurate, beating 23 other models; it only wants more screen contrast.
- Tom's Guide: Best instant-read: 1-1.5 seconds and ±0.1°F in testing, with a calibration certificate; settings are buried under the battery compartment.
- Wirecutter (NYT): Former upgrade pick: fast, accurate and very waterproof, but not worth two to three times the price of the Javelin Pro Duo or Sizzle.
