The budget pick of The Spruce Pets and a huge Amazon seller, with easy assembly, a quiet pump and the lowest low-star share here. But Wirecutter rejected it: the pump switched unpredictably between loud and quiet, and a water-line stain wouldn't wash off. Veken itself says the pump lasts about 1-1.5 years.

    After one week Wirecutter saw a dirt stain at the water line that a soft sponge wouldn't remove, and the plastic top was easily knocked off. The Spruce Pets found the LED extremely bright; turning it off also disables the refill alert.
