Travel + Leisure's best-battery pick: it heats in seconds and runs up to 14 hours on low. Wirecutter rejected it because none of its settings were comfortable in bare hands and it charges a phone only while it is itself plugged in. It also takes hours to recharge and costs about $50.

Top complaints

  • Too hot for bare skin

Wirecutter found none of the settings comfortable for bare hands. Travel + Leisure says the highest level is much too hot for direct skin contact, and Survival Frog itself calls high 'burning hot' and suggests medium.

  • Very slow to recharge

Travel + Leisure says it takes a very long time (several hours) to fully charge, so you need to charge it overnight.

  • Power bank works only while plugged in

Wirecutter found it works as a power bank only while the warmer itself is being charged, which defeats the purpose, and calls it one of the most expensive devices it tested. Travel + Leisure did use it as a portable phone charger.

What owners love

  • Longest battery in Travel + Leisure's test

Up to 14 hours on low and six on high, surviving five uses without running out (Travel + Leisure). The maker lists 6 to 14 hours from a 9,000 mAh battery.

  • Heats almost instantly

It gets hot in under 10 seconds, delivers a surprising amount of heat for its size and held steady heat levels (Travel + Leisure).

Good for
  • Long, very cold days with the warmer in a pocket
  • People who want a lot of heat fast
  • Cold offices or evening events on low

  • Wirecutter (NYT): Dismissed: no setting is comfortable in bare hands, the power bank works only while charging, and it's one of the most expensive models tested.
