TP-Link Tapo C120
- Wi-Fi drops for some owners
Amazon's review summary says connectivity is mixed, with some owners reporting the camera won't stay connected to Wi-Fi.
- Not really an outdoor camera
It's sold as indoor/outdoor, but Wirecutter's plug failed within weeks of outdoor testing, and TP-Link doesn't sell a separate weatherproof cord or plug.
Source: Wirecutter (indoor cameras) - Mediocre audio and no Apple Home
Tom's Guide lists mediocre microphone audio and no Apple HomeKit support as its cons. Wirecutter's indoor guide also says it doesn't support Apple Home.
Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen)
- Effectively requires a subscription
Wirecutter says that, unlike its other picks, the Nest really needs a paid plan: free clips are cut to 10 seconds and auto-delete after six hours. Tom's Guide notes the AI features need Google's $20/mo plan. Some Amazon owners find it expensive.
- Inaccurate Gemini AI
Wirecutter found the Gemini descriptions long-winded and consistently inaccurate. Tom's Guide says the AI isn't always accurate and sometimes tagged a registered familiar face as unknown.
- Throttled alerts and clip control
Wirecutter got alerts only about every 10 minutes at most, which can't be adjusted. The Google Home app also can't delete single clips. Amazon owners report mixed connectivity with the Google Home app.
