Wirecutter's top pick: it has one of the roomiest globes, it is the easiest to deep-clean, and its safety sensors never failed in testing. But it costs about $700, its sensors can be finicky, and Amazon owners are split on how long it lasts.
Top complaints
- Finicky sensors and glitches
Wirecutter says the most common complaint it heard was oversensitive sensors; long-term testers got frequent 'dirty sensor' notifications, likely from dusty litter. Wirecutter also hit a flashing pink-and-blue panel light that Whisker's support pages didn't explain. Tom's Guide says it sometimes squeaks during cleaning, so maintenance is key.
- Price vs. longevity
Amazon's review summary says durability opinions are mixed: some say it's built to last, while others say the premium price doesn't match its longevity. Reliability also gets mixed feedback. Wirecutter notes the standard warranty is one year, extendable to three years for a fee.
- Expensive branded add-ons and supplies
Wirecutter says Whisker's accessories, waste-bin bags and filters are expensive. Cheaper generic consumables exist, but third-party add-ons might invalidate the warranty. Cats.com says it only works with fine-grained clumping litter, not tofu litter, and may be cramped for large cats.
What owners love
- Odor-free and easy to deep-clean
A Wirecutter tester said she was 'shocked at the no smell', and Wirecutter found it the easiest model to deep-clean. Amazon shoppers say it makes cleaning easier and reduces odor.
- Safety sensors that work
In Wirecutter's tests it paused every time a cat came too close, and its anti-pinch sensors stopped and reversed the globe when objects or a hand were placed in the gap.
Source: Wirecutter - Roomy, repairable and well supported
Wirecutter says it has one of the largest interiors and entryways (just under 16 inches), and Whisker is the only maker it found selling replacement parts for DIY repair. Tom's Guide's cats used it about three times as often as the smaller Leo's Loo Too, and it was still holding up after more than a year.
- Your budget is under $500
- Your cat is very large (it is still smaller than experts recommend)
- You use dusty litter and don't want frequent sensor-cleaning alerts
- Owners who want the most proven automatic box
- Multi-cat homes that want weight tracking
- People who want to repair it themselves with official parts

What experts say
- Wirecutter (NYT): Top pick (updated 2026-06-01). It tested better than Whisker's newer Litter-Robot 5 Pro and EVO. Flaws: oversensitive sensors, pricey accessories and supplies, and occasional glitches.
- Tom's Guide: The 'smartest' robotic litter box (2025-04-12), with useful usage data and many accessories, but really expensive and needs maintenance to stop squeaking.
- Cats.com: Runner-up (2026-09-09) behind the Litter-Robot 5 Pro: very reliable with good build quality, but pricey and cramped for large cats. The original fence let urine leak through a gap.
