Wirecutter's upgrade pick and Good Housekeeping's most advanced: 64 recorded sounds you can layer, an Adaptive mode that raises volume when noise rises, and a labeled dial. But at about $140 it has the highest Amazon low-star share among the dedicated sound machines here, with reports of static and units that shut off or fail.

Top complaints

  • Reliability problems

Amazon's summary says reliability is concerning, with reports of it shutting off after 15 minutes and breaking down after six months, plus random static noise.

  • Expensive and bulky

At about $140 it costs roughly twice Wirecutter's top picks, and it's over twice the size of the LectroFan EVO.

  • Takes experimenting; short timer

Good Housekeeping says it isn't simple and the sounds and features take experimenting. The timer tops out at 120 minutes, so for all-night sound you turn it off yourself in the morning (Wirecutter).

What owners love

  • Rich, layered sound

Wirecutter found better sound quality and noise-blocking than any other machine it tested, with 64 real-life recordings across 16 categories that layer into a non-looping soundscape.

  • Adaptive volume

An Adaptive button raises or enriches the sound when the room gets louder (Good Housekeeping testers liked it; Wirecutter did not test it).

  • Clear controls; display goes dark

Raised, clearly labeled buttons and a dial that are easy to use in the dark, a button to turn all display lights off, a headphone jack and two USB charging ports.

Good for
  • Nature and ambient sound lovers
  • Light sleepers who want automatic volume
  • Private listening via headphone jack

What experts say

  • Wirecutter (NYT): Upgrade pick (updated 2026-08-20): best sound quality and noise-blocking tested; large, expensive, and the timer stops at 2 hours.
  • Good Housekeeping: Most advanced: dozens of clear sounds and adaptive volume; not simple, and expensive.
