(checked 2026-10-10)
The listing's 32,374 ratings appear to be shared with the 5520 and 5530 (Amazon search shows the same count for all three), so they are not 5510-only.

The successor to the hugely popular 5500-2, with fast top-speed cleaning and a basic app, but it is loud on high, weaker at quiet speeds, and its ionizer turns itself back on.

Top complaints

  • Loud on high, weaker when quiet

HouseFresh measured 67.2 dBA at top speed, louder than similar-size purifiers, and says cleaning drops at sub-45 dBA speeds. Wirecutter says the 5510/5520 are louder than the Mighty2 and tested worse.

  • Ionizer and display annoyances

Wirecutter says the PlasmaWave ionizer switches back on every time you power it up, and the display only shuts off on the lowest fan speed.

  • Some units fail early

Amazon's review summary says some owners report units running for years while others say it stopped working within days. HouseFresh calls the app bare-bones.

What owners love

  • Fast top-speed cleaning

HouseFresh measured 248 cfm PM1 at top speed, matching the 5500-2, and an AHAM PM2.5 CADR of 252 cfm.

  • Quiet, effective in everyday use

Amazon shoppers call it super quiet and effective at cutting dust and odors, and like the automatic sleep mode at night.

  • App with no ads, real carbon

HouseFresh found the app intuitive and ad-free, and the filter uses 226 g of pelleted activated carbon.

Good for
  • Mid-size rooms around 350 sq ft
  • Pelleted-carbon odor filtering
  • Value mid-range buyers

Scores (tap for why)

Why 4.0?Strong top-speed CADR (HouseFresh), but weaker at quiet speeds; tested below the Mighty2 (Wirecutter).
  • Quietness2.5
Why 2.5?36.8-40.8 dBA on low speeds, but 67.2 dBA on top (HouseFresh); louder than the Mighty2 (Wirecutter).
  • Filter cost3.0
Why 3.0?$79.99 filter set lasting about 12 months (HouseFresh).
  • Controls & app3.0
Why 3.0?Working, ad-free app but bare-bones (HouseFresh); the display stays lit except on the lowest speed and the ionizer re-enables itself (Wirecutter).
  • Durability3.5
Why 3.5?2-year warranty, made in South Korea (HouseFresh); mixed Amazon reports of early failures.

What experts say

  • HouseFresh: Worth considering for strong top-speed cleaning and app support, but louder and weaker at quiet speeds than older Winix models.
  • Wirecutter (NYT): Dismissed (5520/5510): capable, but tested worse than the Mighty2, is louder, and reverts to ionizing at each power-on.
