(checked 2026-10-10)
This Amazon listing pools its ratings with the original Mighty AP-1512HH (same 29,196 ratings and histogram), so it mostly reflects the older model.

Wirecutter's new top pick: a quiet, efficient upgrade of the classic Mighty that cleans as well as anything in its class, but it costs more to buy and run than rivals and has no app.

Top complaints

  • No app, touch-only controls

Wirecutter says the touchscreen has no physical cues, which may be hard for people with visual or dexterity impairments, and there is no app-connected version. HouseFresh also lists no app support and buttons that aren't backlit.

  • Pricier to buy and run

HouseFresh lists it at $269.99 with a $69.99 yearly filter and calls it the most expensive mid-sized unit to buy and run in year one ($415.07). It costs more than comparable Winix, Levoit and Blueair models.

  • Smart mode drops to sleep in the dark; a rattle

HouseFresh found Smart mode switches to Sleep mode in darkness, so it recommends running it on speed 2. One of its two units rattled at low speeds, possibly from transit damage.

What owners love

  • Top-tier cleaning at a quiet speed

Wirecutter measured 99.8% smoke reduction in 30 minutes on high and 99.1% on the second-highest speed, which stays under its 50 dB limit. HouseFresh says it outperformed the original Mighty, Levoit Vital 200S and Winix 5510/5520.

  • Efficient and easy to maintain

Wirecutter measured 48.4 W on high versus 68.7 W for the original Mighty. The prefilter slides out the side and the front panel tilts open for filter changes.

  • Better filter, no ionizer

HouseFresh notes a chunkier filter with pelleted carbon instead of carbon-impregnated fabric, and the ionizer is gone with no loss in performance.

Good for
  • Bedrooms and living rooms up to about 400 sq ft
  • Quiet overnight running
  • People who want a dark display while it runs

Scores (tap for why)

  • Cleaning performance5.0
Why 5.0?99.8% smoke reduction on high and 99.1% under 50 dB in Wirecutter's test; beat several rivals in HouseFresh's test.
  • Quietness4.5
Why 4.5?Wirecutter calls its sound notably flat and stable and quieter than the Mighty; HouseFresh measured 42.6 dBA on speed 2 and 56.9 on turbo.
  • Filter cost3.0
Why 3.0?One $69.99 filter per year (HouseFresh), average for the class but pricier than the original Mighty's.
  • Controls & app3.0
Why 3.0?Intuitive panel with full display shutoff and child lock (Wirecutter), but no app and no backlit buttons (HouseFresh).
  • Durability4.0
Why 4.0?Uses the same proven motor as the Mighty and has a 3-year warranty, but it is new, so there is no long-term record yet.

What experts say

  • Wirecutter (NYT): Top pick (2026): quieter, more efficient and easier to maintain than the original Mighty; the flaw is a non-tactile touch panel with no app version.
  • HouseFresh: One of the best traditional mid-sized purifiers, especially for quietness; the tradeoffs are price, no app and unlit buttons.
