Tom's Guide's pick for older kids and PCMag's best Amazon tablet for kids (4.0): the same 10-inch hardware as the Fire HD 10 Kids, with a slimmer case, a kickstand and a digital store kids can shop with parental approval. PCMag's main gripes are Amazon's in-your-face ads and Amazon-first content, the limited app store, and no promise of software updates.

Subscription: Optional: 1 year of Amazon Kids+ included; then $5/mo with Prime or $8/mo without (PCMag, 2023 review).

Top complaints

  • Limited apps, no Google services

PCMag says the app selection is severely limited: no Google Play, YouTube or Google Docs, and not enough productivity apps for real work. Tom's Guide lists no native Google apps and says productivity has always been a weak spot on Fire tablets.

  • Amazon ads and Amazon-first interface

PCMag's biggest complaint is Amazon itself: 'in-your-face' lock-screen ads and an interface that heavily favors Amazon content. (Amazon's own Kids Pro listings advertise ad-free kids' content.)

  • Weak for games, dull audio, update uncertainty

PCMag saw Roblox stutter and says the tablet isn't built for even moderate gaming. It also notes Amazon makes no update commitments. Tom's Guide says the audio is dull compared with rivals.

What owners love

  • Top-tier parental controls

PCMag calls them top-of-the-line, letting parents limit apps and time per activity and require education first. Tom's Guide calls the controls award-winning and finely tunable.

  • Long battery life

It lasted 14h12m in Tom's Guide's web test and 10h18m of max-brightness video in PCMag's test.

  • Vibrant 10-inch screen and two-year warranty

Tom's Guide praises the vibrant 1080p screen and the comprehensive two-year warranty. PCMag says text looks crisp and video looks good straight on.

Good for
  • Ages 6 to 12 (Amazon's age range)
  • Older kids who'd find the chunky Kids case babyish
  • Video and reading on a big screen with strong controls

Scores (tap for why)

Why 3.5?Smooth 60 FPS apps and easy multitasking (Tom's Guide), and a good 224 ppi screen viewed straight on, but Roblox stutters (PCMag).
