Good Housekeeping's best overall and Tom's Guide's pick for young kids: a big, sharp 1080p screen, the longest battery life in Tom's Guide's tests, a thick case and a two-year replacement guarantee. It's slow for serious games, has no Google Play, and Amazon has just announced Android-based Kids Tablets to replace the Fire line.

Subscription: Optional: 1 year of Amazon Kids+ included; then about $5.99/mo with Prime or $7.99/mo without (PCMag). Reviewers say the tablet is much less useful without it.

Top complaints

  • Limited app selection, no Google Play

Tom's Guide says the app library beyond Amazon Kids+ is extremely constrained, with no Google Play Store apps. Good Housekeeping reports mixed results with outside apps, from families who can't get Roblox to work at all to others who see lag.

  • Underwhelming speed and sound

Tom's Guide lists underwhelming performance and poor sound quality. Its Geekbench score falls well behind the iPad's. PCMag saw Roblox stutter on the same Fire HD 10 hardware.

  • Mixed reliability and battery reports

Amazon's review summary says battery life gets mixed feedback, with some owners saying it doesn't stay charged for long. Some report flickering screens, and some say it stopped working properly.

What owners love

  • Very long battery life

It lasted 14h32m in Tom's Guide's web-browsing test, the longest in its guide. Good Housekeeping lists 13 hours.

  • Kid-proof case and two-year guarantee

Tom's Guide calls it the most durable pick on its list, with a chunky shockproof cover and a two-year warranty. A Good Housekeeping tester says the thick bumper makes it easy for a 4-year-old to grip.

  • Strong parental controls and ad-free kids' content

Good Housekeeping's testers rave about the filters and controls; you can allow unlimited e-books but cap games at 30 minutes. Amazon Kids+ includes thousands of ad-free books and shows.

Good for
  • Ages 3 to 7 (Amazon's age range)
  • Long car rides and flights
  • Parents who want strong, easy controls and a drop warranty
