PCMag's and CNET's favorite retrofit: it fits over your existing deadbolt, keeps your keys and works with almost every platform. The catch is batteries that PCMag says last up to three months (some Amazon owners say six weeks) and a bulky body. Some owners also report random auto-unlocks.

Top complaints

  • Short battery life

PCMag says its two CR123 batteries are expected to last up to three months, so keep spares, and lists short battery life as a con. Amazon's summary says owners report replacing them about every six weeks.

  • Auto-unlock and Wi-Fi misfires

Amazon's summary says feedback on auto-unlock and Wi-Fi is mixed, with some owners reporting random unlocking at night and frequent disconnections. Wirecutter warns that geofenced auto-unlock risks accidental unlocking on any lock.

  • Bulky and pricey

Tom's Guide calls it 'quite bulky' and prefers the slimmer Yale Approach. CNET says it is still bulky and lacks full Matter support. PCMag lists it as pricey, and some Amazon owners say it isn't worth the price.

What owners love

  • Keeps your keys, easy to install

It replaces only the inside thumb turn and uses your existing deadbolt and keys (PCMag, CNET). PCMag calls installation easy, and Amazon shoppers agree.

  • Works with nearly everything

PCMag says it works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Siri and IFTTT, plus Honeywell, Logitech, SimpliSafe and Samsung, with built-in Wi-Fi and no bridge. Amazon shoppers like the HomeKit and Alexa support.

  • Quiet and dependable in testing

In PCMag's tests it locked and unlocked instantly and was virtually silent. Auto-lock worked flawlessly, and the DoorSense sensor always reported the door correctly.

What experts say

  • PCMag: 4.5/5, Editors' Choice and Best Retrofit Smart Lock. Easy to install with broad third-party support, but pricey with short battery life.
  • CNET: Best retrofit smart lock: easy to fit to existing deadbolts with Alexa, Google and Apple Home support. Still bulky, and no full Matter support yet.
  • Tom's Guide: Also tested: a good option with wide compatibility, but quite bulky; Tom's Guide would pick the Yale Approach instead.
