Wirecutter's top pick: easy to install, top-grade hardware and rubber keys that are simple to use. But the Schlage app is slow, it doesn't work with Apple Home or Matter, and it has no door sensor, so auto-lock can throw the bolt while the door is open.
Top complaints
- Slow app, settings only in Bluetooth range
Wirecutter says it has never enjoyed the Schlage app: it is slower than others and still tedious after two major updates, and settings such as adding a user can be changed only within Bluetooth range. PCWorld, by contrast, found the redesigned app cleaner.
Source: Wirecutter (NYT), PCWorld review - Wi-Fi and Google Home hiccups, no Apple Home
In Wirecutter's tests Google Home showed the lock out of sync, saying it was locked when it wasn't, and unlocking from the app then failed. Amazon's summary says Wi-Fi connectivity is mixed, with some owners reporting frequent disconnections. PCWorld notes it has no Apple Home or Matter support and uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
- Missing door sensor and alarm
Wirecutter and PCWorld note there's no door open/close sensor, so auto-lock will lock even if the door is left open. Wirecutter also notes there's no tamper or impact alarm. PCWorld says Wi-Fi shortens battery life and calls the price a bit high for the features. Amazon owners are split on battery life and value.
What owners love
- One of the easiest installs
Wirecutter says the exterior part grips the hole as you insert it, there's room to tuck the cable away and no special tools are needed. PCWorld installed it in about 10 minutes with just a Phillips screwdriver, and Amazon shoppers call it easy to install.
- Top-grade hardware
Wirecutter says every Schlage lock it has tested earned ANSI Grade 1 or BHMA AAA, and this one comes with 3-inch screws and a thick steel strike plate that locksmiths recommend against kick-ins. PCWorld calls it incredibly well-made.
Source: Wirecutter (NYT), PCWorld review - Simple, tactile keypad
Wirecutter likes the raised rubber keys, which you can feel in the dark. The lock wakes on the first press and unlocks as soon as you enter a four-digit code, and Wirecutter says it 'works flawlessly'. PCWorld found keypad unlocking instant.

What experts say
- Wirecutter (NYT): Top pick (updated 2026-01-20) for its mix of hardware, security, reliability and simplicity. Its flaws are a weak app, Google Home sync problems, and no door sensor or alarm.
- PCWorld: A well-made set-it-and-forget-it lock with built-in Wi-Fi, but a bit expensive for its limited features and without Apple Home, Matter or a door sensor.
