Wirecutter's budget pick and a PCMag Editors' Choice: the same Google TV software as Google's box, plus Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet and hands-free voice, for far less. It stutters a little more, feels cheaper, and is sold only at Walmart. Walmart now sells a 2026 refresh; the expert reviews cover the earlier model.

Top complaints

  • Slower and stutters

Wirecutter found it slower to load the home screen and apps than the Google TV Streamer, more hiccup-prone after several apps, and quick to close background apps. PCMag says menus occasionally stutter.

  • Cheap-feeling hardware

Wirecutter calls the plastic box, mesh cover, barrel AC plug and remote low-quality, says it might not survive a few knocks, and finds the big 'Free TV' remote button tacky.

  • Walmart only; audio dropouts for some

Wirecutter notes it's sold only at Walmart and may be out of stock. Walmart's AI review summary for the 2026 model says sound can cut out, pop or go quiet.

What owners love

  • Full Google TV for less

PCMag calls it what the Google TV Streamer should have been: Dolby Vision, Atmos, Google Cast and all major apps including Twitch. Wirecutter found it snappier than the Roku Ultra.

  • Hands-free voice with a mic switch

Far-field microphones in the box let you say 'Hey Google' without the remote, and a physical switch turns them off (Wirecutter, PCMag).

  • Lots of ports and extras

Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, a USB-A port, a remote finder and an HDMI cable in the box (Wirecutter). Walmart shoppers praise easy setup and value.

Good for
  • Google TV on a budget
  • Hands-free 'Hey Google' voice control
  • Wi-Fi 6 plus an Ethernet port

Scores (tap for why)

  • Remote3.5
Why 3.5?Works well enough and has a customizable shortcut and a finder chime, but feels cheap (Wirecutter, PCMag).
  • Wi-Fi & reliability3.5
Why 3.5?Wi-Fi 6 plus (non-gigabit) Ethernet, but Wirecutter doubts it would survive knocks. Walmart shows 6% 1-2 star ratings for the 2026 model.
