Good Housekeeping's best value and the cheapest way into Amazon's kids' bundle of case, two-year warranty and Kids+ trial. It's slow, its 7-inch 1,024 x 600 screen is grainy and hard to see in bright light, and there's too little storage for Minecraft or Roblox.

Subscription: Optional: Amazon Kids+ trial included (6 months per Good Housekeeping; 1 year per PCMag's 2022 review), then about $8–9/mo auto-renewing (Good Housekeeping).

Top complaints

  • Slow, low-res screen

PCMag says it's still sluggish and the 1,024 x 600 screen is unimpressive and hard to see in bright light. Wirecutter says it's slower than the Fire HD 8, with a less colorful, lower-resolution screen.

  • Too little storage for big games

Good Housekeeping says there's so little storage that big games like Minecraft or Roblox are out.

  • Fiddly setup

Good Housekeeping's Lab parents say setup isn't easy, and there's a learning curve for families used to iOS.

What owners love

  • Tough case plus two-year warranty

PCMag dropped it several times on hard and soft surfaces and it 'easily shrugged off' each impact. The screen sits deep in the case, and the warranty covers replacement.

  • Low price for the whole bundle

PCMag says the tablet, case, warranty and Kids+ would cost far more bought separately. Good Housekeeping calls it the best value.

  • Better-than-average controls

PCMag says the Parent Dashboard lets you set limits, educational goals and web filtering, and that Amazon does a better-than-average job.

What experts say

  • Good Housekeeping: Best value (updated 2026-08-13). Its con is not enough storage for big games.
  • PCMag: 3.5 Good (2022 review). Not fast and the screen isn't high quality, but very good value.
  • Wirecutter (NYT): Listed under 'The competition': a bit cheaper than the Fire HD 8 Kids, but slower, with a worse screen.
