Wirecutter's top dog pick for the most consistently accurate live tracking and the fastest GPS connection it measured. But PCMag got four to eight false escape alerts a day and poor battery life when Wi-Fi power saving wouldn't connect, and about 1 in 4 Amazon ratings are 1 or 2 stars.
Subscription: Required, prepaid: $120 for 1 year, $168 for 2 years or $300 for 5 years (PCMag); Wirecutter says Tractive has no monthly option
Top complaints
- False escape alerts
PCMag got four to eight false 'left the safe zone' alerts per day while the dog was napping nearby; Tractive told PCMag the system is tuned to err on the side of sensitivity. A Wirecutter long-term tester also had false escape alerts, while Wirecutter's own testing twice missed real exits.
- Battery life varies a lot
PCMag couldn't get the Wi-Fi Power Saving Zone to work after weeks of troubleshooting, so battery life suffered. Amazon's review summary says some owners get two weeks per charge and others only one.
- Bulky, with mixed durability
Wirecutter calls it pretty clunky next to Fi's trackers, and PCMag says it feels about twice as large as the Fi Mini. Amazon's summary says durability is mixed, with some units breaking within 60 days.
What owners love
- Most accurate live tracking
Wirecutter found it gave the most consistently accurate live-tracking updates of any device it tested, usually off by only a few yards, and it connected in about 13 seconds on average, faster than every other tracker.

PCMag's real escape alerts all arrived within 90 seconds, most closer to 60, faster than the Fi Mini's.
Source: PCMag Tractive Dog 6 review - Lights, waterproofing and USB-C
Wirecutter likes the bright LED strips, IP68 waterproofing that held up in rain and snow, and the built-in USB-C port. Amazon owners call the app easy to use.
- You have a small dog and want a slim tracker
- Frequent false alerts would make you ignore them
- You want to pay month to month
- Following a runaway dog in near real time
- Medium and large dogs (9 lb and up)
- Lowest total cost after the first year
- Very large dogs (over 70–80 lb): the bigger Dog 6 XL had by far the best battery life in Wirecutter's tests

What experts say
- Wirecutter (NYT): Top pick for dogs (updated 2026-05-11). It has the best accuracy, connection speed and battery life, but it's bulky and the app can be glitchy.
- PCMag: The hardware is a delight, but Wi-Fi pairing failures and frequent false escape alerts keep PCMag from fully recommending it. PCMag prefers the Fi Mini.
