PCMag's best overall doorbell, with sharp video, instant and accurate alerts and a minutes-long install. But you must subscribe to see any recordings, Consumer Reports rates its privacy weak, and about 1 in 5 Amazon ratings are 1 or 2 stars, citing connection and battery trouble.

Subscription: Needed to view recordings and get smart alerts: Arlo Secure from $4.99/mo for one camera (PCMag); Consumer Reports lists Secure Plus at $10/mo

Top complaints

  • Subscription needed to see recordings

PCMag says local storage isn't an option, and you need an Arlo Secure plan to view recordings and unlock smart alerts. Consumer Reports says there's no free cloud storage and many smart features need a plan. Walmart 1-star reviewers complain about subscription charges.

  • Connection, pairing and battery failures

Amazon's summary says some owners report frequent internet connection issues, faster-than-expected battery drain, and units that stopped working after a few weeks. Low-star Walmart reviews describe failed pairing, random disconnects, a battery that wouldn't charge, and no luck with an existing chime.

  • Weak privacy, no color night vision

Consumer Reports gives it top marks for security but calls its privacy weak. PCMag notes there's no color night vision and no Apple HomeKit support.

What owners love

  • Fast, accurate alerts

PCMag says motion alerts arrived instantly and were correctly identified. Consumer Reports gives it top marks for alert speed.

  • Sharp, wide video

PCMag saw excellent daytime detail and sharp night video to about 25 feet, with a 180-degree head-to-toe view. Consumer Reports rates the video strong, and Amazon shoppers praise the clear 2K video.

  • Quick install, broad compatibility

PCMag says it installs in minutes with no wiring needed and works with Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and SmartThings.

What experts say

  • PCMag: 4.0/5, Editors' Choice and Best Overall (roundup updated 2026-06-04). The cons are that recordings need a subscription, there's no color night vision and no HomeKit.
  • Consumer Reports: First on CR's 2026 list, with strong video and top marks for alert speed and security. Privacy is weak, and many smart features need a plan.
  • Wirecutter (NYT): Not a pick: Wirecutter says it had a better experience with its picks than with the Arlo Video Doorbell.
