Wirecutter's and Tom's Guide's top pick: sharp 2K video and the most accurate motion detection Wirecutter has tested. But the free plan barely records anything, so budget at least $10 a month, and it needs existing doorbell wiring.

Subscription: Free tier keeps only 10-second clips for 6 hours; Google Home Premium $10/mo (30 days) or Advanced $20/mo (60 days + 10 days of 24/7)

Top complaints

  • Subscription is practically required

Wirecutter says the free tier saves only 10-second clips that auto-delete after six hours, which in its tests 'barely caught a visitor's foot'. It calls a subscription essential and the $10/month plan the most expensive of its picks for a single camera. Tom's Guide and PCMag list the subscription and the lack of local storage as cons, and a Walmart reviewer calls the subscription price too high.

  • AI features and alerts can misfire

Wirecutter found Gemini for Home 'consistently makes errors' and says Nest sends at most about one alert every 10 minutes, a delay you can't adjust. Tom's Guide says Gemini sometimes failed to recognize people it had been taught. A 1-star Walmart review complains of constant 'person spotted' alerts when no one was there.

  • Wiring, chime and Wi-Fi hassles

It needs a 16-24VAC doorbell transformer, and Tom's Guide suggests an electrician if you aren't comfortable with low-voltage wiring. There's no included chime, so you need an existing chime or Google speakers. Amazon's summary says some owners struggle with the Wi-Fi connection. Low-star Walmart reviews describe a difficult install and a chime that wouldn't stop ringing.

What owners love

  • Most accurate motion detection tested

Wirecutter says it was the most accurate doorbell it tested at telling people, animals, vehicles and packages apart. It never missed an event or gave a false alert, and clips run up to five minutes.

  • Sharp 2K video with a tall view

Tom's Guide and PCMag praise the sharp 2K HDR video and 166-degree view, which shows packages below the doorbell. Amazon shoppers call the video crystal clear.

  • Polished app and useful AI search

Tom's Guide says the Google Home app is clean and intuitive and notifications arrived almost instantly. PCMag found Gemini video search and event descriptions accurate.

Good for
  • Homes with existing doorbell wiring
  • Google Home and Gemini users
  • Fewest false alerts with activity zones

Scores (tap for why)

  • Video quality4.0
Why 4.0?Sharp 2K HDR with a 166-degree view (Tom's Guide, PCMag). Night video is mostly black and white; PCMag calls low-light color merely decent.
  • Smart alerts4.5
Why 4.5?Wirecutter's most accurate doorbell for motion types and zones, with no false alerts, though notifications are throttled to about one every 10 minutes and Gemini is error-prone.
  • App & reliability4.0
Why 4.0?Tom's Guide says the app works well. Amazon owners report mixed Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Ongoing cost2.0
Why 2.0?The free tier is only 10-second clips kept for 6 hours. Plans cost $10 or $20 a month, the most expensive single-camera plan among Wirecutter's picks.
  • Easy install3.0
Why 3.0?About 10 minutes for Tom's Guide if you are comfortable with wiring, but it is wired only and needs an existing chime or Google speakers. Some Walmart owners found the install hard.

What experts say

  • Wirecutter (NYT): Top pick (updated 2026-08-05), the best doorbell it has tested for accurate alerts. A subscription is essential, and it can't recommend relying on Gemini yet.
  • Tom's Guide: Best overall (updated 2026-06-16). The cons are that a subscription is necessary, it is wired only, and there's no battery backup.
  • PCMag: 4.0/5, Best Gemini Integration. Easy to recommend to Google Home users, but there's no local storage and some features cost extra.
