Top complaints
Coop Original Adjustable Pillow
- Chemical smell out of the box
Amazon's summary says several customers report an awful smell. One of the six Coop pillows Wirecutter ordered had a strong off-gassing smell for several days; the other five had no noticeable scent.
- Can run warm
Tom's Guide lists it as not for chronic hot sleepers. A Wirecutter reader said they wake up with a sweaty head on it, though CNN found it kept them cool and dry on warm nights.
- Thin cover that pills
Good Housekeeping saw the polyester/rayon cover pill after laundering and use. Wirecutter found the cover thinner and less resilient than others, and CNN's cat clawed holes in the thin knit cover of the Crescent version.
- Needs fluffing; adjusting is messy
Tom's Guide says it needs regular fluffing to keep its shape and support. Good Housekeeping found adjusting the fill a bit messy.

Purple Harmony Pillow
- Cooling doesn't work for everyone
Tom's Guide's reviewer slept warm most nights and often woke with a sweaty head and neck. Some Purple customers say they flip it to find a cool spot. Good Housekeeping's hot-sleeper testers, by contrast, all said it slept cooler.
- Shape and durability are mixed
Amazon's summary says some owners find it goes flat or breaks down over time, while others say it holds its shape.
- Expensive, short trial, and a snag-prone cover
List price is $209-$249 (Tom's Guide), the trial dropped from 100 to 30 nights, and the warranty is one year. Tom's Guide found pulls in the mesh cover.
- Wrong loft can cause neck pain
Tom's Guide says neck-pain complaints in customer reviews are often tied to choosing a pillow too high or too low.
